1,400 Pounds in Change Collected for Pennies for Police Dogs Drive

March 12, 2012

By John Barker, Douglas Patch

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit pose with more than 1,400 pounds of change collected for the Pennies for Police Dogs charity drive.

Four Paws Pet-Sitting Service has donated funds annually to Chase Away K9 Cancer, Pennies for Police Service Dogs penny drive.  This penny drive was started after K-9 handler, Officer Joe Shirley with the Norfolk Southern Railroad Police Department, learned that his canine partner, Muis, had cancer in December, 2009.  Muis was put to sleep in February, 2010.  In March 2005, Four Paws Pet-Sitting Service made a $100 donation towards the purchase of a bullet/stab proof vest for canine officer Muis.  The penny drive is another way for us to pay tribute to a great dog whose career ended way too early.  All funds are donated to Chase Away K9 Cancer in memory of Muis.   This year’s event started Feb. 27 thru March 9.
